Fairways Club 2019 Pool works

Remember that the Fairways complex will be closed as a result of the works to the swimming pool and La Isla bridge during the whole of the month of May 2019. The work will include a new pool basin including sloped access allowing wheelchair access, new filtration and an independent separation of the children’s pool.

Fun with Oscar

Remember during your stay to join in with the activities organised by Oscar. The weather has generally been pretty good this winter and the complex is just starting to get busy. The pool activities are very popular, especially the Aqua Gym and there are also plenty of other things going on including Pool, Table Tennis and Darts competitions plus the ever-popular Bingo competition.

Both the kids and adults love Oscar’s body painting, and there’s always something going on.

Fairways Annual Golf Tournament

The Fairways Golf tournament proved a successful event once more, with a good level of participation. It was a close run contest this year under difficult conditions and with plenty of twists and turns, but the eventual winners were Bill Barrett who won the overall prize, and Jim Swan who was the Best Fairways Owner winner.
Bill Barret together with the Fairways Duty Manager, Max Goddard
Jim Swan together with Brian Lake and Max Goddard.
The prizes were sponsored jointly by the Richvale Group Owner Ian Goddard, the Fairways Community Administrator, WimPen Leisure, and the President of the Fairways Community of Owners, Brian lake.

Off the beaten track - La Laguna

We use this section to describe other aspects of the island of Tenerife that one perhaps doesn’t normally get to hear about. There is so much to discover, and for this edition we have turned to the historic city of La Laguna. It is said to be the only example of a Colonial city that is not enclosed by a wall.

The city possesses a coat of arms conceded by the Queen Juana de Castilla in the fourteenth century, when the city was then the capital city of the island.

La Laguna has been named Unesco World Heritage site and is a colourful, historic university town, with a vibrant shopping district and a lively atmosphere. It’s a fabulous experience just to lose yourself in its cobbled streets and be sure to treat yourself to a refreshment in one of the many street-side cafés. La Laguna is connected by tram to the island’s capital, Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz Carnival 2019

The newly elected Carnival Queen was Priscila Medina Quintero, beating another eighteen candidates. The dresses are known as “fantasies” with this particular one being called “La Nuit”. It was designed by Sedimir Rodriguez and sponsored by Autoinsular Citroën. As you can see from this stunning picture, the dress was quite spectacular.

One of the most emotive moments was when one of the other aspiring contestants fell over and such was the weight of her dress that she couldn’t get up again without assistance! The second photograph shows that the Carnival is ever so slightly popular!

Wine Tasting in Tenerife

There are as many as 70 bodegas on the island of Tenerife, and in most cases the wine is not exported, so one of the best ways to sample it is to visit the bodegas yourself. There are five wine growing areas on the island:

- Tacoronte   - Valle de La Orotava
- Ycoden Daute Isora   - Valle de Guimar   - Abona

Whilst the wine growing areas are quite small-scale (this is the reason why exports are limited or non-existent in some cases), the vines themselves are some of the oldest in the world. This is due to the fact that Tenerife was never hit by the Phylloxera plague that decimated many of the vines around Europe. This, combined with the volcanic soil and microclimates around the island, make the wine quite unique.
Casa de Vinos in El Suazal is one of the most popular wine tasting venues (vinotecas). Excursions can be arranged to a number of destinations including several much closer to Fairways in the Abona region in locations such as Vilaflor. A fabulous wine excursion is available from Fairways that takes in several bodegas including Casa de Vinos, and information can be obtained at the Fairways reception.

We highly recommend this coming season

Loro Parque
One of the most famous and best kept parks in the world, that just keeps getting better. There are fabulous shows that include parrots, sea lions, dolphins and the world-famous orcas. There is plenty for kids and adults alike, with Katandra Treetops, penguins, aquarium, gorillas and so much more. The park is regularly voted on Trip Advisor as one of the best parks in the world.

Mount Teide & Cable car ride

A visit to the highest mountain in Spain is a must when visiting Tenerife. There is a cable car service, and after that a path to the peak that rises to 3718 metres, although you will need to be in good physical condition to manage the walk. The national park itself offers a fascinating landscape, with many viewing points offering insights into the origins of the volcano and the island itself.
Siam Park
This is one of the best water theme parks in the world, so good in fact that in 2014 it was voted as the world’s best water park and has the best trip advisor rating. The park keeps on adding attractions, with each new one taking the thrills to new levels.

Helidream Helicopter Trips

This is an amazing excursion for the truly adventurous, with a variety of flight options, for a truly unforgettable experience. One look at this picture and you can see what we mean.
