Fiestas in Tenerife
October sees Adeje celebrating its local fiesta and that naturally is very important to the “Adejeros” for religious, cultural and sporting reasons and of course not forgetting the festivities themselves. These include folkloric music, a spectacle on horseback, many people dressed in the traditional costumes, and naturally activities for the children, plus the usual dances in the church square with live bands.
In November it’s the turn of Puerto de la Cruz with their San Andrés Scrap Metal and Chestnut Festival. Yes, you’ve read that correctly!

The local residents congregate in the local square (La plaza del charco to be precise) on the 29th November, and attach pots, tins and old metal items to a strong wire. They then proceed to drag them behind them trying to make the maximum amount of noise. Some even drag old washing machines!

From the photo you will get the general idea:
Once this has finished the locals then sample regional Canarian food such as gofio amasado (a paste made from millet flour), sweet potato known as batata, the local fish cherne, local wines and let’s not forget the chestnuts!

We very much doubt that you’ll have seen something similar elsewhere!
Community News
Given that the pool will not be refurbished until May next year, we are employing another team of divers to repair the patches of lost tiles. Given the fact that the work of the last team of divers lasted so little, this will be a more thorough job involving closing off a portion of the pool. The divers will actually remove any loose surface material before they lay the new tiles.

The delicate condition of the base material will mean that it will be a case of fingers crossed to see how long the work lasts, but the idea is that at the very least the repaired parts will see us through until the May closedown.

The Pool Security employee is no longer working with us, and a replacement is currently being sought. It is anticipated that an appointment will be made shortly.
Virtually all of the work planned for the year is already complete. One of the last items to be completed were two of the entrance gates. The original iron gates were very heavy, made a lot of noise, and were generally pretty inconvenient. On top of this, given that half of the old iron doors were solid, we found that in heavy winds they were too heavy for the hydraulic arms, and therefore sometimes didn’t close shut properly. The replacements doors are in alumium, and the perforations mean that the wind can now pass through, and therefore the doors are much more manageable all round, especially for the elderly.
Activities on site
Oscar has enjoyed a well-earned break and has only just returned to work. Now that the summer has ended there will be a change to the entertainment schedule. The Aquagym will continue as will other favourites such as boules, darts, pool etc.

There is also a new “stretching”activity that has been introduced recently.
Making Waves in Tenerife Sur!
La Mesa, the new clubhouse restaurant at Fairways, is fully up and running. La Mesa offers a variety of dishes for all discerning tastes and is winning over many guests with the quality food and friendly service. You can ´go local´ and try the Gambas al ajillo or have a homely treat and try the renowned fish and chips. The Sunday Roast is now so popular around the area that booking in advance is almost a necessity. On your next trip to Fairways make sure you pop in and say “Hello” to the team!

Off the beaten track - Arenas Negras
The Arenas Negras trek is a fascinating walk that as you can see from the photographs is close to the peak of Mount Teide. The altitude oscillates between 2000 and 2300 metres, and the walk itself is classified as of medium difficulty.

The starting point is the Visitors Centre in El Portillo which is a great place to start because it is full of interesting information about Mount Teide and the volcanic origins. The trek itself has a length of 7.6km that takes approximately 3 hours and is ideal given that it is a circular route and therefore takes you back to where you left the car!

The best time of the year for the trek is in Spring when the tajinaste plants (endemic to Tenerife) are in full bloom. In the winter months it is clearly important to check the meteorological conditions, because snowfall or strong winds are quite possible at that altitude. At the time of writing however, there are daytime temperatures of 27 degrees centigrade.

To get to the visitors centre, one must drive up to the national park (the Vilaflor route is the quickest from Fairways), and take the road TF-21 to Km 32.1.

The centre is open every day of the year from 9am to 6pm except Christmas and New Year’s Day.
